Through innovative programming, dynamic curriculum, and access to impactful books and materials, we foster responsive caregiving, cultural competency, and meaningful engagement to create environments where children and families thrive.

Playful Minds

The mission of Family Learning Connections (FLC) is to empower caregivers and community members with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to foster children's cognitive, physical, language, and social-emotional development. Through innovative, culturally responsive, and inclusive training, the National Literacy Institute (NLI) bridges the gap between learning and practical application. FLC transforms parents into confident facilitators of their children’s growth by offering interactive sessions, home-based activities, personalized feedback, and community support. Our commitment is to build stronger family connections that inspire lasting developmental success for every child.

Eligibility and Application Community Member
Target Population

Community members (parents/guardians of children ages 0-8 and informalcaregivers) residing or working in designated Harris County zip codes (Harris County Public Library will serve the following zip codes: 77379, 77033, 77021, 77047, 77051, and 77048.

YMCA of Greater Houston will serve the following zip codes: 77091, 77022, 77009, 77076, 77060, 77032, 77039 and 77037.

East Harris County Empowerment Council will serve the following zip codes: 77015, 77029, 77044, 77049 and 77530.

VN Teamwork will serve the following zip codes: 77027, 77036, 77056, 77057, 77072, 77074 77081 and 77099.), at or below 85% of the State Median Income (SMI).
Informal caregivers are defined as those who provide care for children ages 0-8 for a minimum of 10 hours a week.
Training modules will last approximately 1 hour in length, totaling 4 hours. Must attend all 4 to receive stipend.
Training modules will be in-person and conducted on weekends or after 5:00 PM on weekdays.

By combining fun, intentional activities with language-rich experiences and active learning, we create opportunities for younger learners to expand their vocabulary, strengthen communication skills, and build the cognitive foundations necessary for lifelong literacy success.

Target Population:
Parents/guardians of children ages 0-8 and informal caregivers residing or working in designated Harris County zip codes.
Application Instructions:
Please fill out the application completely. All fields are required. This training program is mandatory, and participants must attend all training sessions to receive the stipend.
